The History:
Located In the Mission Beach hinterland between Innisfail and Tully sits the township of El Arish. El Arish is a WW1 soldier settlement whose name is derived from Egypt. Returned soldiers were allocated land via a ballot system and they cleared the land by hand to grow sugar cane for the mills.
The El Arish Hotel was built by Harry Dear in 1927 with 11 rooms to accommodate the hard working and drinking cane cutters, for almost 100 years the El Arish Tavern has been, and still is the main social meeting place for locals and tourists.
